Sire of Merit / Dam of Merit Award

General Information

The Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada (DPCC) is pleased to present a Sire of Merit and Dam of Merit Award to honour the sires and dams who have contributed to our breed's long history as working dog, protector, beautiful show dog and loyal companion. Award recipients have contributed to the versatility and quality of our breed and are a testament to the commitment and effort of their owners.

The SOM and DOM titles are difficult to earn, but not impossible. The owners of the sires and dams cannot do it by themselves, as they must have help from their clients. From both a breeder's and a client's standpoint, the SOM and DOM titles demonstrate the ability of sires and dams to produce pups with sound structure, temperament, and workability.

PLEASE NOTE: The SOM and DOM awards are not officially recognized by CKC and should not be submitted as part of the dog's name on CKC documents such as show entry forms or litter applications. The DPCC Executive will hold the right to review the SOM/DOM every five (5) years. This allows the club to make changes as necessary

Definitions of SOM/DOM Awards

  • Sire of Merit (SOM): Dogs qualifying for this award must have offspring who have earned a cumulative total of 64 points towards their sire receiving the SOM award. Points are accumulated as noted in the SOM/DOM Table of Points may be earned from a variety of disciplines; a minimum of 44 points must have been earned from Canadian Championship points. Each offspring may contribute a maximum of 8 qualifying points from the Conformation or Performance Venues. Offspring who obtain a LC (lived 10 years) may earn an extra 2 points (in addition to the 8 point maximum).
  • Dam of Merit (DOM): o Bitches qualifying for this award must have offspring who have earned a cumulative total of 40 points towards their dam receiving the DOM award. Points are accumulated as noted in the SOM/DOM Table of Points. Points may be earned from a variety of disciplines; a minimum of 24 points must have been earned from Canadian Championship points. Each offspring may contribute a maximum of 8 points to the dam qualifying for the award. Offspring who obtain a LC (lived 10 years) may earn an extra 2 points (in addition to the 8 point maximum).

Guidelines:

  • Titles may be either American or Canadian. Note that duplicate titles earned in both countries count only once (e.g., if an offspring receives both an American and a Canadian CD, the CD counts only once, not twice).
  • Deceased and/or living dogs are eligible for the award.
  • The applicant is responsible for providing all documentation to back up the applicant's claim to titles earned by offspring contributing to the SOM or DOM award.
  • Membership is not a requirement to receive the award, however non-members will pay a fee of $25 for each award. Fee must be provided with the application.

Using the DPCC Register of Merit SOM/DOM Table of Points, list the points for each offspring's title. Then add up the total points earned by all the offspring. Note that each offspring may contribute a maximum of 8 qualifying points towards their sire or dam's total.
