A Message to the Members of the DPCC from the DPCC Board
Clarification of Code of Ethics Rule # 10
"No member of the DPCC shall breed more than 4 litters per year that are to
be registered under the sole kennel name of that member"
It has become apparent that the wording of rule # 10 regarding the maximum number of litters allowed by DPCC members is in need of clarification.
It is a difficult task to find wording which would eliminate every attempt to circumvent a rule, and this one is no exception. For the benefit of all members we would like to clarify the spirit and intent of this rule.
The intent of this rule is not to suggest that 4 litters per year in a breeding program constitutes an acceptable practice for the good of the Breed. In fact, seldom in the history of our Breed has anyone who breeds that prolifically, year after year, succeeded in improving their bloodline or the Breed. It's those who have selectively bred only the best of those dogs available to them, who have managed to maintain and improve quality.
We arrived at the number of 4, to allow for the odd, and exceptional circumstance, where a member who has not usually produced more than one or two litters a year, finds that in one year circumstances made it necessary to breed all their available bitches in a single year without penalty.
When we say "breed", we mean breed or co-breed. When the rule says "member" that means the member and any member of that member's family. When the rule says "sole kennel name" that means this members breedings, and their breeding program.
To clarify even further with examples:
Couples with two separate kennel names and breeding programs who marry, must live with the 4-litter maximum. If one registered Kennel owner (breeder) marries another Dobe breeder, kennel owner or kennel name owner, they may not combine their allowable litter number per year to make 8. They will be contravening the rule. DPCC Members Pat Blenkey and Brian Casey would be a case in point. Pat is fully supportive of this rule, and she and Brian would not ever think of circumventing it by using separate memberships, although they have two kennel names and two memberships, between them. Everyone understands that Pat and Brian's breeding program is a joint one.
If one member of a household is a DPCC member, and one is not, the member can not register 4 litters in their own name as breeder, and more in the name of the family member who is a not a DPCC member. Not if they wish to continue their membership in DPCC. For example, Carolyn Irvine is a DPCC member, and her husband Roy is not. Carolyn understands fully that having her husband listed as the breeder of any litters exceeding 4 would be a contravention of the meaning of this rule, which she supports fully. To further explain, listing any other member of the household as the breeder, and/or coming up with a second or third kennel name to increase the maximum allowed litters over the 4, is not within the spirit of this rule.
The intention of the DPCC is to ensure its Code of Ethics is followed by its members. We hope this clarification will help all members who may have misunderstood, to stay within the guidelines with their breeding practices.
DPCC Code Of Ethics – Revised 2006
By signing this Code Of Ethics, members agree to conform to the obligations it imposes on member conduct when buying, selling, breeding and exhibiting the Doberman Pinscher. All DPCC members therefore agree to comply strictly with all and each of the following standards of conduct:
- Abide by the Constitution and the Bylaws of the Doberman Pinscher Club Of Canada, Inc. and the rules of the Canadian Kennel Club.
- Members must keep accurate breeding records, registrations and pedigrees; further, they should maintain the best possible standards of canine health, cleanliness and care.

- The DPCC does not promote the breeding of albino (also sometimes called white) Dobermans. The albino Doberman is a newly introduced disqualification in our breed standard. All DPCC members are encouraged to research the bloodline of any and all breeding stock and avoid breeding to any dogs that might introduce the albino/white gene into any litters. Any member not following this policy will be refused membership in the DPCC.
- DPCC members shall support the efforts of the DPCC relative to health issues, and have their dogs tested for health disorders known to affect the breed.
- All dogs offered at stud shall not knowingly be bred prior to one (1) year of age and shall be in good health and free from communicable diseases and disqualifying faults. Any bitch accepted for stud service shall be at least eighteen (18) months of age, in good health, free from communicable diseases and disqualifying faults. All breedings that occur shall be done with the intention of the preservation and betterment of the breed, taking into consideration structure, health and temperament, as well as the ability of the breeder to be responsible for the puppies produced.
